The drum corps season is far too short these days – and there’s certainly not enough activity in the Northeast anymore. 20 years ago the season would start in May and last almost to Labor day. There were contests every weekend and you hardly had to drive more than 2 hours to see one. There were countless drum corps and countless fans and followers. Today, the audience is shrinking; why? They are either dying off or doing other things. Oh and another thing, drum corps is expensive! Not just to watch it, but to participate! I’ve heard tuition fees as high as $3500 for the 7 week summer.
There are however, some things about drum corps that will never change:
1) You will never agree with the judges. It’s just a fact.
2) Your corps will always be the best – even if the scores don’t always say so.
3) There’s always going to be something tugging at you to come back next summer.
I have one more event – a DCA show in Bridgeport, CT at the end of August – to round out my 2013 summer. Then it’s on to other events; weddings and the like.
